The Price Is Right? Payoffs for Senators Typical in Health Care Bill

FOXNews.com - The Price Is Right? Payoffs for Senators Typical in Health Care Bill

Sen. Ben Nelson's hardly the only lawmaker extracting sweetheart deals out of the health care reform bill.

While the Nebraska Democrat got a particularly juicy concession in exchange for a "yes" vote on the 10-year, $871 billion package -- permanent and full federal aid for his state's expanded Medicaid population -- support from a slew of other senators likewise came with a price.

Western states got more money for hospitals that serve Medicare patients. Louisiana got up to $300 million in Medicaid benefits. The list goes on.

White House Crashers Won't Testify, Could Face Subpoenas

FOXNews.com - White House Crashers Won't Testify, Could Face Subpoenas

House lawmakers want answers in a hearing Thursday about how the Salahis managed to sail through security checkpoints while their names were not on a list of approved guests for the dinner.

I guess Congress will spend most of its time prior to the Christmas break dealing with this rather than debating something important. This situation is an embarrassment to the White House, the Pentagon and the Secret Service. Instead of letting this go and enforcing the current process, we are spending day after day dealing with this.

Leaked E-mails Muddy Waters Ahead of Climate Change Conference

Leaked E-mails Muddy Waters Ahead of Climate Change Conference - FOXNews.com

President Obama faces no easy task in uniting dozens of bickering nations toward the goal of tackling climate change at an international conference in Copenhagen next week. But as if that weren't hard enough, a slew of leaked e-mails in the run-up to the conference has only fueled global warming skeptics who say the cause is bunk.

The president announced last week that he would attend the United Nations meeting, in a bid to drive some manner of agreement to set new greenhouse gas emissions targets -- though a legally binding deal is unlikely.

But shortly before his announcement, hackers broke into the servers at the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia in Great Britain and posted e-mails in which scientists dismissed climate change skeptics, expressed concern about the lack of evidence to prove the threat of global warming and even made one reference to a plan to "hide the decline" in temperatures.

Climate Change Scientists Admit Dumping Data

Climate Change Scientists Admit Dumping Data - Biology | Astronomy | Chemistry | Physics - FOXNews.com

Scientists at the University of East Anglia have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years.

My thoughts: If the facts don't bare out your conclusion, just dump the data you don't want and leave only the information that proves your point. So what if no one can review your calculations for accuracy. Big deal, right?

Wall Street Journal OpEd Piece Sums Up Feelings on President Obama for Both Arab and US

I was reading a very interesting article about President Obama in the Wall Street Journal. It was an OpEd piece about the Arabs and how they are no longer applauding Obama's efforts.

This article reminds me of the "Saturday Night Live" skit about Obama's "Do Nothing" position.

The last paragraph in the OpEd piece sums up quite nicely the feeling of the Arabs and the citizens of the United States.

The laws of gravity, the weight of history and of precedent, have caught up with the Obama presidency. We are beyond stirring speeches. The novelty of the Obama approach, and the Obama persona, has worn off. There is a whole American diplomatic tradition to draw upon—engagements made, wisdom acquired in the course of decades, and, yes, accounts to be settled with rogues and tyrannies. They might yet help this administration find its way out of a labyrinth of its own making.

The Obama administration can legally pay the embattled community organizing group ACORN for services performed under contracts before Congress banned the government from providing money to the group, the Justice Department has declared.

Although I'm not happy with this, I can see why the government can release these funds to ACORN. I do believe that the organization needs to be investigated and closely monitored in the future.

Senate Poised to Take Up Health Care Bill Next Week - FOXNews.com

The Senate's Thanksgiving break will end with a bang Monday when debate is scheduled to begin on sweeping legislation to remake the U.S. health care system, a showdown likely to last for weeks.

The debate on the Senate's version of the legislation will test the strength of a re-energized Republican insurgency and the loyalty of a fractured Democratic majority.

This will be fun to watch. I think the Blue Dog Democrats will be breaking ranks with their party over this bill.

Judge Erases $525G Mortgage for N.Y. Couple, Citing 'Repulsive' Acts by Bank - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News - FOXNews.com

A Long Island couple is home free after an outraged judge gave them an amazing Thanksgiving present — canceling their debt to ruthless bankers trying to toss them out on the street.

Suffolk Judge Jeffrey Spinner wiped out $525,000 in mortgage payments demanded by a California bank, blasting its "harsh, repugnant, shocking and repulsive" acts, the New York Post reported.

The bombshell decision leaves Diane Yano-Horoski and her husband, Greg Horoski, owing absolutely no money on their ranch house in East Patchogue.

Spinner pulled no punches as he smacked down the bankers at OneWest — who took an $814.2 million federal bailout but have a record of coldbloodedly foreclosing on any homeowner owing money.

OneWest also has a similar case in California. In that case, they are trying to foreclose on an 89 year old woman after being told twice by the courts to stop their activities and work with the woman.

GAO: Stimulus Jobs Data Inaccurate

GAO: Stimulus Jobs Data Inaccurate - FOXBusiness.com

Administration reports that more than 640,000 jobs were created or saved by the government’s $787 billion stimulus program are inaccurate due to flawed reporting from recipients of the money, a report from the Government Accountability Office shows.

About 10% of those jobs – more than 58,000 – were created as the result of projects that so far have reported spending no money, the GAO study issued on Thursday found. Another 10,000 projects that have spent a total of $965 million reported creating no jobs. As many as 10% of stimulus recipients did not report anything to the government’s Recovery Board, the agency created to track the money.

The only benefit I have seen from the stimulus package is the extensions given by the government to my unemployment benefits. So far, I have sent out almost 1200 applications and close to 600 applications. Still nothing, but rejections.

More about America's Debt: China

While watching Fox News, I was listening to Stuart Varney, the financial correspondent. He pointed that China now owns $797.1 billion of our debt. I find that very alarming. Do you realize that a communist country owns 23.35% of our debt?

With more and more jobs going overseas along with our money, it is very difficult to see us remaining as a super power. What has happened to our nation? I know that we have had public debt since the inception of the United States. However, we are spending more and more. Politicians continue to shovel our money into the furnace at an alarming rate. How can they say that taxes will not go up and that current levels of services will not suffer?

All I can say is that Congress uses smoke and mirrors to help with the disappearing act of our money and jobs.

Iran Slams U.S. Moves to Seize Muslim-Owned Properties - Local News News Articles National News US News - FOXNews.com

NEW YORK — Iran on Sunday denounced as 'disgraceful' U.S. moves to seize four mosques and a New York City skyscraper owned by a Muslim nonprofit organization suspected of Iranian links.

Ali Larijani said the moves show that President Barack Obama's slogan for change was deceitful and he was no different from his predecessor George W. Bush.

I think that this is very interesting. The US has offered to discuss the situation regarding their enrichment program. Iran has rejected it. If Iran has nothing to hide, why won't they discuss this openly.

As I had mentioned before, we have given Iran too much time and opportunities. I think they will have a nuclear weapon shortly or may have one already.

Sources: House Health Bill Totals $1.2 Trillion

Sources: House Health Bill Totals $1.2 Trillion - FOXNews.com

WASHINGTON -- The health care bill headed for a vote in the House this week costs $1.2 trillion or more over a decade, according to numerous Democratic officials and figures contained in an analysis by congressional budget experts, far higher than the $900 billion cited by President Barack Obama as a price tag for his reform plan.
While the Congressional Budget Office has put the cost of expanding coverage in the legislation at roughly $1 trillion, Democrats added billions more on higher spending for public health, a reinsurance program to hold down retiree health costs, payments for preventive services and more.

I guess we are finally talking "real" money here. What's a trillion dollars here and trillion dollars there. The cost of health care is spiraling out of control. We need to address that more than anything else. Think about it. I used to pay $5 for a prescription. The actual cost is almost $40. Since most people including our own doctors are insulated from the true prices of health care, they have no clue what it is costing someone. It doesn't matter who pays for the health care. Ultimately, we all do either through government programs or through higher premiums.

I have friends who are doctors and they are considering going to a cash only system. They are tired of the insurance problems and employing more people just to handle the red tape of the insurance companies. In some offices, there are more people who handle insurance than those who handle patients. Don't you think that's crazy.

Lawmakers Eye Untapped Stimulus Funds as Obama Proposes New Spending

Lawmakers Eye Untapped Stimulus Funds as Obama Proposes New Spending - Political News - FOXNews.com

With the bulk of the $787 billion stimulus package still unspent, some lawmakers say, President Obama should not be adding yet another $13 billion to the deficit by funding a one-time $250 Social Security payment.
The complaints are coming from Republicans, who see last February's recovery act as a fiscal blunder that has failed to stem rising unemployment. In some cases, such as the Social Security checks, they see the pot of money still waiting to be spent as a way to head off additional deficit spending in other areas.

I can tell you from personal experience that the stimulus package did nothing for me. I'm still unemployed and am looking for something during the holidays.

Senators Raid Troop Funding for Pet Projects, Watchdog Groups Say - Political News - FOXNews.com

Senators are raiding money meant to pay for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan so they can fund pet projects in their home districts, taxpayer watchdog groups charged this week.

Data compiled by the organizations show that senators attached 778 earmarks worth nearly $2.7 billion to the 2010 defense appropriations bill.

With the economy the way it is and the earmarks already added to other bills such as the stimulus package, Congress has the nerve to seek more and more money for their districts. I guess they are afraid that their voters will not re-elect them after pushing through the current health care reform.

Republicans don't have to worry too much during the next elections. The Democrats are doing a great job in killing their party.

17-Pound, 4-Month-Old Baby Denied Health Insurance for Being Too Fat

17-Pound, 4-Month-Old Baby Denied Health Insurance for Being Too Fat - Children's Health - FOXNews.com

Nothing brings a smile to an adult's face quicker than the sight of a happy, chubby baby.
But the sight of 4-month-old Alex Lange, who measures 25-inches long and weighs 17 pounds, is bringing a frown to the hypothetical face of insurance company Rocky Mountain Health Plans, The Denver Post reported on its Web site Monday.

The biggest issue is the fact that health insurance companies will not even try to cover people. They want to insure only those who are in perfect health so they can collect the premiums. Health insurance companies push and will continue to push people with pre-existing conditions to state high-risk pools. The premiums in those programs are higher than the highest premiums of the health insurance companies.

I still believe that tort reform is needed in a major way when it comes to medical lawsuits. If the doctor or hospital has done something criminally wrong, then I say throw the book at them. But, if the doctor and hospital have done everything humanly possible, then we don't sue. Doctors and hospitals can only do so much. There are 2 rules in medicine.

1. People die.
2. Doctors, no matter how hard they try or what they do, can't change rule #1.

Senate Health Bill Imposes $29B More in Taxes

WASHINGTON -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger praised President Barack Obama's drive to overhaul the nation's health care system on Tuesday and urged fellow Republicans to join in efforts to finish the job this year.
The new Republican support for Obama's top domestic priority came as a potential setback emerged for Senate health legislation: Congressional tax experts reported that the bill would impose $29 billion more in taxes on health care industries than originally thought -- levies that could be passed on to consumers in the form of higher premiums.

By placing more taxes on corporations, the consumer will ultimately have to pay more for the goods and services that being taxed. When you get right down to it, you will either pay the government for health care or government via increased prices by corporations who are being taxed.
In either case, the government will get its money and the those in elected office can say without hesitation, "I didn't raise taxes on the consumers."

Abercrombie & Fitch: Michael S. Jeffries, $71.8 million
BJ Services Company, J.W. Stewart: $34.6 million
Comcast Corp., Brian L. Roberts: $40.8 million
International Paper, John V. Faraci: $38.2 million
Nabors Industries, Eugene M. Isenberg: $79.3 million

Investor returns for these companies all dropped at least 20 percent for the one-year period ending this past June. For Abercrombie, BJ and Nabors, the drops were closer to 60 percent.

This is absolutely wonderful. While people are getting laidoff by the thousands, these guys get bonused for poor performance and for saving money by laying people off.

Reid Threatens 'Nuclear Option' to Pass Health Care Reform as Panel Starts Work - Political News - FOXNews.com

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid threatened on Tuesday to use a procedural maneuver to steamroll opponents of health care reform, even as a Senate panel began delicate negotiations over a package that could have the best chance at passing.

The "nuclear option" is a procedural maneuver that would allow Democrats to pass key parts of the legislation with a simple majority, as opposed to the 60 votes needed to avoid a Republican filibuster.

NEW YORK--High U.S. unemployment keeps pushing up the rate of mortgage delinquencies, which could in turn drive personal bankruptcies and home foreclosures, monthly data from the Equifax Inc credit bureau showed on Monday.

Congress Targets ACORN in a Bipartisan Way

Congress Targets ACORN in a Bipartisan Way - Political News - FOXNews.com

Congressional Republicans are clearly united against funneling federal dollars to the community organizing group ACORN. But surprisingly, so are many Democrats.
In a legislative surprise Tuesday, the House overwhelmingly voted to withhold all funding for ACORN. Later Thursday, a Republican senator targeted the group through yet another spending bill, also eyeing a total ban.

I am glad to see that Republicans and Democrats can come together on this. If it were only one incident, I may have said nothing about it and just let it go. But, with all of the videoes and each worse than the last, it is time to investigate the organization who has been receiving federal funds and was being used by the Census Bureau.

Fourth Videotape Reveals ACORN Advising "Pimp", "Prostitute" in California

Fourth Videotape Reveals ACORN Advising 'Pimp,' 'Prostitute' in California - Local News News Articles National News US News - FOXNews.com

Not again! A fourth video about ACORN providing advise to get around the IRS and get money for housing.

Much like in their previous undercover stings at the group's offices in Baltimore, Washington and Brooklyn, N.Y., filmmaker James O'Keefe, 25, and his 20-year-old partner Hannah Giles, who posed as a prostitute named "Eden," were given assistance on Aug. 17 from a staffer at ACORN's office in San Bernardino on how to avoid detection by law enforcement. The couple even tell ACORN staffer Tresa Kaelke — who admits on the videotape to previously having sex for money — that they plan on bringing in 12 girls from El Salvador to work in a home they hope to acquire via the community organization.

Republican Lawmakers Turn Up the Heat on ACORN

Republican Lawmakers Turn Up the Heat on ACORN - Political News - FOXNews.com

A growing number of Republican lawmakers are calling for congressional hearings and IRS audits of ACORN following the release of three videotapes that show the group's employees offering advice to a "pimp" and a "prostitute" on how to skirt the law.
Rep. Steve King, R-IA, said a video released Monday that shows filmmaker James O'Keefe, 25, and Hannah Giles, 20, getting advice from ACORN employees in Brooklyn, N.Y., on how to launder their earnings and avoid detection while running a prostitution business is "another reason to turn it up" on ACORN.

Further in the news article, ACORN has threatened legal action against FOX and those who made the videos.

ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis said the videos capturing her former workers were "doctored, edited, and in no way the result of the fabricated story being portrayed by conservative activist 'filmmaker' O'Keefe and his partner in crime."

Lewis said ACORN will take legal action against FOX News and those involved in the making of the videos. She said ACORN offices were also targeted in San Diego, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Philadelphia, among other places.

After riding this article and the others, ACORN needs to be investigated. According to USASpending.gov, a federal government Web site for tracking government grants, ACORN Housing Corporation received $1.6 million to provide housing services to low-income communities in this fiscal year, ending Sept. 30. The Department of Housing and Urban Development Grants has given $8.2 million to ACORN between 2003 and 2006, as well as $1.6 million to ACORN affiliates.

I think ACORN should use legal action against FOX and the makers of the videos. To be quite honest, ACORN will also suffer from their own legal actions. Going to court or suing someone is like using a double-edged sword. It cuts both ways.

Election Trouble Brewing for House Dems in 2010

Election Trouble Brewing for House Dems in 2010 - Political News - FOXNews.com

NEW YORK -- Despite sweeping Democratic successes in the past two national elections, continuing job losses and President Barack Obama's slipping support could lead to double-digit losses for the party in next year's congressional races and may even threaten their House control.
Fifty-four new Democrats were swept into the House in 2006 and 2008, helping the party claim a decisive majority as voters soured on a Republican president and embraced Obama's message of hope and change. Many of the new Democrats are in districts carried by Republican John McCain in last year's presidential contest; others are in traditional swing districts that have proved tough for either party to hold.

I knew this would happen. If the Republicans want to get back in the good graces of the American people, they need to remain true to their ideology.
  1. Small government: Reduce the government's footprint and its desire to worm its way into the lives of Americans.
  2. Fiscal responsibility: Don't spend like drunken sailors. Reduce the waste in government.
  3. Be responsive to the people: Listen to the people. Don't tell them what they should think and tell them that only elected officials know what's best. This is the big one for most voters. Politicians have been acting like they are not working for us. BIG MISTAKE! If our leaders believe that they don't need to listen to us, we get their attention by voting them out of office.

Third Videotape Reveals ACORN Assisting Pimp", "Prostitute" in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Third Videotape Reveals ACORN Assisting 'Pimp,' 'Prostitute' in Brooklyn, N.Y. - Local News News Articles National News US News - FOXNews.com

Days after the release of hidden-camera videos led to the firing of four ACORN workers in Baltimore and Washington who assisted an independent filmmaker posing as a pimp to apply for an illegal housing loan for a brothel, a third video has surfaced showing ACORN workers offering the same kind of assistance at the organization's office in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Once again, another ACORN problem. I guess there will be an investigation. Or, at least, I hope that there will be an investigation.

The other thing that is very interesting about this whole situation is the information they are giving out. Does ACORN run classes for their employees to teach them techniques on skirting IRS, banking regulations, falsifying loan application information and how to declare underage girls used as prostitutes as "dependents"?

ACORN is missing a perfect opportunity to generate revenue by offering these classes to the public. Or, maybe, they can offer them as part of the punishment as "community service".

After Census Severs Ties, ACORN May Face Scrutiny of Housing Grants - Political News - FOXNews.com

Conservatives have cheered the Census Bureau's decision to sever ties with ACORN because it had lost confidence in the group, but the hidden-camera videos that prompted ACORN to fire four workers this week could raise more questions about the federal funding ACORN receives for housing outreach.
ACORN Housing Corporation received $1.6 million to provide housing services to low-income communities in this fiscal year, ending Sept. 30, according to USASpending.gov, a federal government Web site for tracking government grants.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development Grants has given $8.2 million to ACORN in the years between 2003 and 2006, as well as $1.6million to ACORN affiliates.

Taxpayers Face Heavy Losses on Auto Bailout

Taxpayers Face Heavy Losses on Auto Bailout - Political News - FOXNews.com

WASHINGTON - Taxpayers face losses on a significant portion of the $81 billion in government aid provided to the auto industry, an oversight panel said in a report to be released Wednesday.
The Congressional Oversight Panel did not provide an estimate of the projected loss in its latest monthly report on the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program. But it said most of the $23 billion initially provided to General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC late last year is unlikely to be repaid.

Is the Dollar Doomed?

Read This Because the Dollar Is Doomed

Brian Richards and I wrote back in March that we thought the dollar might be doomed. That was because:1. The United States has a massive and growing deficit.2. The United States continues to generate significant trade deficits.3. The United States has become oh-so-willing to print money out of thin air to meet its increasing obligations, and to prop up the likes of AIG (NYSE: AIG) and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC).

Given the health care program, stimulus package, bank bailouts, "cash for clunkers" program, we are spending too much money and spending money we really don't have. Take a look at this article on wikipedia. Click here.

Read the article carefully and you will be appalled by what you see.

Oil Hits 2009 High Above $74, Eyes Fed Speech

Oil Hits 2009 High Above $74, Eyes Fed Speech - FOXBusiness.com

Now, this doesn't make any real sense to me. I understand that the economy is on the mend according to analysts and that the dollar is stronger against the euro. However, I don't understand why gas prices are going up again.

According the Fox News article, "As yet, there were few signs of recovering U.S. fuel demand. Freight traffic across North America fell 17.9% in the week ended Aug. 15 from the same 2008 week, a trade group said on Thursday in a weekly report." Given that, Americans haven't started driving all over the place and they aren't buying SUV's like crazy again.

Everyone agrees that our economy is driven by petroleum. If the gas prices continue to go up, the so-called recovery in the economy will stall and falter. It will drive us further downward. I feel that the economy has to be nurtured along for a bit before gas prices go up. If this trend in gas prices continues its upward climb like last summer, the economy will tank again. (No pun intended.)

Federal Deficit to Hit $1.58 Trillion This Year

Federal Deficit to Hit $1.58 Trillion This Year - Political News - FOXNews.com

Some economists have said that the number isn't too bad. Let's look at the national debt. The nation's debt now stands at $11.7 trillion.

With all of the money going out, we are saddling our children with a massive debt. The only way for the government to continue all of their programs is to raise taxes. I honestly don't see any other way.

If we tax the wealthy and corporations, we will only be taking away from investment capital. I suggest that spending needs to be capped at the government level. All expenditures need to be reviewed.

Senator Arlen Specter, during his last televised town hall meeting, was asked about term limitations and if he would support it. He didn't answer the question. He simply said that term limitations already existing and the voters can exercise it during elections.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we need to exercise our rights and remove those free-spenders from Congress and send people who are fiscally responsible and are there to serve the nation rather than themselves.

While I have been unemployed for almost 9 months, I have volunteered at a local retirement community. I have cleaned tables, helped lead exercises, teach computer classes, lead Sunday morning worship services and Bible studies and a host of other things. In all cases the needs of the residents have always come first.

When people start putting others ahead of themselves, things get down.

Buffett Warns of Threat of Rising U.S. Debt - FOXBusiness.com

The Oracle of Omaha has spoken and I believe that he is right in what he is saying. The government is spending money at an unprecedented rate and is running up a huge debt that we will be passing along to our children and their children.

What will future generations say about our spending? They will call us irresponsible and wonder why we didn't put our foot down with our elected representative.

If we have any concern for future generations, we need to put the brakes on all spending and work to reduce the deficit by acting fiscally responsible. We need to be good stewards of our money and "secure the Blessings of Liberty (financial liberty) to ourselves and our Posterity."

Senator Arlen Specter Hosting Town Hall Meeting

I'm watching Fox News' coverage of a town hall meeting on health care hosted by Senator Arlen Specter. People are upset with more than just the health care. The people are upset with government's decisions that have been made in a vacuum.

In response to a question regarding the writing of bills at a Junior High School reading level, Senator Specter responded by saying, "I'll try."

Americans are tired of hearing those words from our government. The Congress has not listened to the American people for quite some time. TARP, the Stimulus Package and the continued discussion on health care are just examples of the government's failure to listen to the people. A gentleman talked about trust. The American public no longer trusts the government and is growing tired of this.

I have been unemployed for over 8 months and have talked with many people who are actively looking for jobs. The Stimulus bill hasn't done much for me or others. I have had to apply for extension to my unemployment benefits. I have sent out over 800 resume and almost 400 applications. The American people have no confidence in the economy or the government.

Poster Outrage - FOXNews.com

Poster Outrage - FOXNews.com

I ran across this interesting article about a poster depicted President Obama as the Joker and all of the outrage that has come from it.

Last year, President Bush was depicted as the Joker in Vanity Fair. There was very little outrage. In fact, very little was said by most Republicans and it was taken in stride.

To be quite honest, I really don't appreciate this type of poster of a President. But, I do realize that people are entitled to say what's on their minds. I am a firm believer of the 1st Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

Over the past couple of months, I have had more and more abusive comments about my observations of politics. I have refused to post those that have been extremely abusive and obscene. I have also realized a few that been very good in stimulating debate. I really appreciate those. The best thing we can do as Americans is to openly discuss problems and work to a solution without being mean-spirited.

Deadline Broken, Talks Continue for Health Bill - Political News - FOXNews.com

Yesterday I was listening to Senator Orin Hatch talking about health care. He pointed out that one-sixth of US economic activity goes to health care. I believe we need to have health care reform. I'm not too keen on the idea of the federal government running it. But, things have to change.

I believe that we as Americans have been shielded too long from the actual prices of health care. After having been laid off, I had to find a health care plan that allowed me to stretch my budget a little further. Now that I'm shouldering more of the financial burden of my health care, I realize just how expensive things are. I think that if we truly knew what things cost, we would act as upset consumers and fight for change and lower prices.

Official: N. Korea Fires Third Short-Range Missile - North Korea | Map | Government - FOXNews.com

North Korea test fired their short-range missiles. All this managed to do is escalate an already tense situation. All of the saber-rattling that North Korea has done has put the world on edge. A Japanese newspaper said that North Korea could be ready to test a long-range missile by the 4th of July. Given the past situations, I could honestly see them test firing a missile on the 4th of July in order to thumb their noses at the United States.

As I had mentioned in an earlier blog post, Kim Jong-il wants to have military superiority in the region at all cost even if it means his people going hungry. With the average North Korean person earning an annual income of $900, Kim Jong-il drinks a certain Hennessey cognac that sells for $630 a bottle in Korea. According to those around him, Kim Jong-il purchases between $650,000 and $720,000 and has become Hennessey's best customer. People escaping from the tyranny of North Korea also report that he has 17 palaces. His own people do not know about all of this. If they did, I believe his days as leader would be numbered. However, his military would easily crush his opposition.

I feel for the North Koreans.

Gas Prices Up Again?

When will we learn? I don't understand why gas prices are going up. There hasn't been a major interruption in the flow of oil. If fact, oil stockpiles are higher than they ever were. From where I'm sitting, I see my old friend, Greed, tucking a napkin under his chin and gorging himself.

It seems that investors see the economy improving and want to take advantage of the public once again. Investors see the summer driving season as an excuse to push gas prices up and make a killing off of us. Are we going to stand for it? I say keep conserving and drive down the prices. Until we move forward with a true energy program for our nation, we will suffer more and more at the hands of greed.

As I had said before, I'm not a communist or socialist. I'm believe in free markets, but when people get taken advantage of just for a few more cents per share, I got a serious problem with that. Many Americans are losing their jobs for just a few more cents per share. When gas and diesel prices dropped, did you see the cost of food drop? No, they didn't. They are staying right where they are. As Americans, we have always been able to sacrifice for the good of the nation, but we haven't done that. Why is that? It goes back to that same thing I just mentioned. Companies want a few more cents per share.

Arlen Specter Switches Sides

While I was watching a news segment about Arlen Specter's switch to the Democratic party, I was shocked by his reason. He said that he felt that by being a Republican would cost him his Senate seat.

Is that the only reason for your change, Mr. Specter? I thought people who went to Washington served the people and not themselves. It is so sad to hear that people simply change sides to win a seat in the Senate or elected office.

So much for serving the people. I guess it is OK to do change sides if it is for selfish reasons. If he had mentioned something about the party or its platform on spending, military or something else, I could have accepted his change and pointed to my fellow Republicans yet another example of how we are continuing to fail the people.

This week the Republican party leadership met to discuss the future of the party and they are wondering how to improve their image. It is simple, guys.
  1. Start acting like Republicans! Small government, less taxes, fiscal responsibility.
  2. Stop falling prey to the flavor of the day syndrome. Stay focused. I respect individuals who stay on course rather than flip-flopping in their opinions.
  3. Demonstrate to the American people a sense of nationalism and pride.
  4. Stand up for the American ideal.

You will be surprised by how just doing these things will change the opinions of the American people.

Another Tax Day has Come and Gone

I read an article several years ago that stated that Americans spend a total of 300 million man hours to complete their taxes. That is equivalent to all three of the US auto makers producing vehicles for one year. I talked to people from other countries and they said that their income tax systems are worse than ours. I can't even imagine just how complicated their systems are.

As for me, I would prefer moving to a consumption tax. When you consider just how complicated our system, they has to be a better way. I have looked at the "Fair Tax" plan and thought about a consumption tax. To be quite honest, I know that I have to pay for the government, but no matter what system we choose. There must be a change to the spending habits of our local, state and federal governments.

I think that a simplified tax system could be created. When Steve Forbes ran for the White House, he wanted a simplified tax system. I think he was on to something. You could just have a simple flat tax.

Right now, I'm opened to anything that will reduce the amount of time we spend on taxes and wonder in we got the right answer when we sign our forms.

Spend or Save?

This is a question that is facing a lot of people including the President. Should we begin to spend money in order to stimulate the economy in hopes of improving things? Or, do we need to save our money in the event the economy continues its downward trend?

I can say this. With the confidence level of the CEOs extremely low and their predictions that the GDP will decline by 1.9% and more layoffs will occur within the next 6 months, I would say that the answer has already been made. Take a look at it. If people are afraid that they will be laid off, will they honestly consider buying a computer or a big screen television? I don't think so. I don't have a degree from a prestigious business school, but I can tell you that 99% of the people I have talked to will not be spending their tax refund checks on frivolous toys. For example, my brother said that he was using his tax refund to pay off some more of his debt. I think my brother is doing the right thing with his check. Yes, he could have bought something with it; however, he decided that being debt-free was more important.

On the other hand, he could have purchased something and saved a person's job. I am being idealistic. The money wouldn't save a job, but it would be used to pay a bonus or package for some executive in the company. Until we get to a point where confidence increases for both businesses and consumers, Americans will continue to save money. I have a refund check on its way to me and I will be saving it until I find a job.

With more and more Americans out of work, spending will continue to drop and people will save more and more of their money. So, it doesn't matter how money the government pumps into the economy. Until Americans have jobs, we will not be spending. In a recent article, I read that food purchases constitute 49% of Wal-Mart's sales. People are saving money. The days of unbridled consumerism are over.

Have you noticed that gas prices are increasing? So much for spending on luxury items.

Finger Pointing at AIG

I was just reading a series of articles about AIG and its former CEO and largest individual stockholder, Maurice "Hank" Greenberg, who is the creator of the AIG investment unit that triggered the insurance company's meltdown.

In a testimony in front of a congressional panel, he claimed that he was a victim and that he left the company in a solid and profitable condition. Those still at AIG say that Greenberg knew about all of this and was there when the CDS, Credit Default Swaps, were being sold at a fast and furious pace.

To me, I don't care who is to blame regarding all of this, but something needs to happen. I am a capitalist and believe in fair and open markets. However, it seems to me that every time we allow an industry to regulate itself, the industry begins to conduct business with no accountability or responsibility for its actions. Don't get me wrong. I prefer small government and I believe that industries should regulate themselves whenever possible. It just seems like they can't for whatever reason. This situation and the subsequent downturn in the economy is yet another good example of deregulation gone awry.

I miss the days of conservative investments made by solid companies. To me, all of these different investment instruments seem like a big Ponzi scheme to make money for a few. If something happens everyone who can afford it can run for cover. Families like mine and yours get the raw deal and we have to bailout the companies for mistakes made by a few people who don't care about others.

I was watching an old "I Love Lucy" episode this morning with Tennessee Ernie Ford. He played Lucy's cousin. In order to get rid of him, Ricky and Lucy pretend to be broke. Well, cousin Ernie comes to the rescue and gets food and takes up a collection. He presents the money and food to them and tells them that people are good and kind. People come to the aid of one another and do not try to profit from hard times.

There is a lesson for us all. Thanks, cousin Ernie! I hope we can learn from your words.

More Money to the Banks!

I was reading an AP article, "Treasury secretary says market won't solve problem", and learned that there is $135 billion dollars in bailout money left and that more money may need to be provided to the banks.

When is this going to stop? I am all for working out a plan to save the economy especially if it means that I will get a job. (Yes, I am still unemployed. In April, I will be on my fourth month of being unemployed.) However, I do not want to see us building up more and more debt.

To be quite honest, I do not believe the analysts or the treasury secretary has a clue on how to save the economy. Don't look at me for a solution. I just enjoy poking holes in other people's plans. However, something has to give. Companies are still scared to hire people. I have heard from several people the same story. They have interviewed and are just waiting for the company to move forward on hiring. They won't, because they are scared to hire people with the economy the way it is.

I applied for a job in early January with a company looking for a program manager to manage their vendor channels. That job matched my skills perfectly. I contacted the HR department and finally got an answer. The job is indefinite hold. The whole country is on indefinite hold.

Bonuses are One Thing; Jets are Another

A friend of mine, Bruce, posted this on his Facebook wall and I had to go read the article. The AIG bonuses are a little galling to me. Most of the executives have agreed to return them. Good for them. However, buying corporate jets and renovating the hanger to make them more luxurious is another. I find it sickening.

According ABC News, "embattled bank JPMorgan Chase, the recipient of $25 billion in TARP funds, is going ahead with a $138 million plan to buy two new luxury corporate jets and build 'the premier corporate aircraft hangar on the eastern seaboard" to house them.'"

I guess none of this surprises me anymore. Executives believe they are entitled to these toys for their private use. The President's speech weeks ago, he talked about one executive who gave his bonus to his employees. Why can't corporate executives do things like that? That would inspire their employees to work harder and build morale. Instead, corporate executives "enjoy" laying people off and keeping their perks and toys at the expense of those who do the real work of the company on a daily basis.

Sad State of Affairs: Jobless to Topless

I was reading an article on the Associated Press web page about more women become strippers or going into the adult entertainment business. Click here for the full article.

This is a very sad state of affairs for our nation. According to the article more women with college degrees who were laid off from white-collar jobs are becoming strippers or sending applications to adult magazines like Hustler.

Instead of finding legitimate work of any kind, these women want more money and are willing to sell themselves for cash. If you ask anyone in the strip clubs or adult entertainment industry about exploitation, they will ask you the same question back, "Who is exploiting whom?"

Take a look at it this way. A guy goes to a strip club with $400 in his pocket and after drinking and dances, he leaves with no money in his pocket. The stripper makes a small amount of the money and the rest goes to the club. Like the old adage goes, "the house always wins."

The biggest problem I see with our nation is that we have not learned our lessons over over the past months. We still remain greedy and we want the money to continue to roll in with little or no effort. Being lazy and greedy makes a dangerous combination. It speaks volumes about our culture and our values.

I am truly saddened.

A Good Thing: The 9-12 Project

Most of the time I am fairly critical about things, but today is a little different. While I was surfing the 'net, I ran across a very interesting project that I think would be great for a lot of people. It is called the "9-12 Project". This project was started by Glenn Beck, noted radio talk show host. My wife and I listen to him and watch his program as well.

Back to the project, the purpose of the project is to remind ourselves of how we felt after 9/11. Families and friends came together to support one another. As we watched 9/11 and the aftermath, we came together as a nation to support efforts to help families affected that day. I remember children collecting money for families and for all of the people who were helping. I saw the best of America during that week. People found a common focus and goal.

Looking in history, America has always come to the aid of other. After WWII, America came to the aid of its allies and enemies by enacting the European Recovery Program or what came to be called the Marshall Plan. It was designed to get Europe back on its feet. It helped all of our allies as well as the Germans and Italians. It showed what can be done when nations come together in peace and with a common goal in mind.

I support the "9-12 Project" and what it means. If we are to survive the economic upheaval that we are facing, we need to come together as a nation and as a global community to help one another.

Interesting Thing about Earmarks

I was reading an article by CNN talking about earmarks and how they have been given a bad reputation. The one thing that struck me was the fact that the majority party gets 60% of the earmark money and that the minority gets 40%.

Both parties are feeding at the trough. The only difference is which one gets more than the other. Each time we have a changing of the guard we are told that things will be different and spending will be controlled and things will change. It is the same tired, old rhetoric every single time. I think both parties should simply do a video clips on Youtube and just point us to them each time they take power.

I keep hearing the same things. "Things will be different." "There's a new sheriff in town." "We are going to change things." Don't get me wrong. I'm not singling out Democrats or Republicans. I'm calling out the whole lot of them. Both sides of the aisle have been guilty of it. I have talked with people in barber shops and coffee houses. They all say the same thing. Both parties are to blame.

I remember when I was growing up when Democrats would blame Republicans and Republicans would blame Democrats. Now, everyone I talk with today blames both parties for not doing what is necessary. We have too much free spending of our tax dollars and not enough fiscal responsibility. Government has gotten too big and it is worming its way further and further into our lives.

Congress approves massive $410B spending bill

The $410 billion bill is chock-full of those pet projects and significant increases in food aid for the poor, energy research and other programs. It was supposed to have been completed last fall, but Democrats opted against election-year battles with Republicans and former President George W. Bush.

I guess no matter what party is in power. We will always have pork in the budget. Thanks, guys! 8,000 pet projects and $7.7 billion.

Pork Barrel Spending Still Alive and Well in Congress

Taxpayers for Common Sense (TCS) has been going through the omnibus to pull together a total number of earmarks and dollar amount. TCS found 8,570 disclosed earmarks worth $7.7 billion. When you add the $6.6 billion in disclosed earmarks that were in the three FY09 spending bills that passed in the fall (Defense, DHS, MilCon/VA) you end up with $14.3 billion worth of disclosed earmarks in FY09.

That's right, ladies and gentlemen, Congress especially those individuals on appropriation committees are making sure that their people back at home are benefiting from all of the government spending so that they can re-elect these people.

Here are some of the programs that are receiving money.

  • $24,000 A+ for Abstinence. Specter is sponsor.
  • $300,000 Montana World Trade Center. Rehberg sponsor.
  • $1.7 million for pig odor research in Iowa.
  • $2.1 million for the Center for Grape Genetics in New York.
  • $1.7 million for a honeybee factory in Weslaco, Texas.

Do you believe the nerve of Congress? Each claims that new jobs will be created. Can someone tell me why we need to spend $1.7 million on pig odor? Are we working on a deodorant for pigs? To me, we can do without all of this and return some of the money back to the taxpayer or truly use the money to benefit the economy.

President Obama said that earmarking would come to an end in his administration. It was one of those campaign promises as well. He said that Biden would act as "sheriff" to make sure that government money wasn't wasted. Biden, before becoming Vice President, secured $52 million for his state in earmarks. I guess Sheriff Joe is looking the other way on this one or, like Deputy Barney Fife, forgot to put the bullet in his gun. President Obama said that he would sign the spending bill with all the earmarks, because this was old business and needed to handle it. This is hogwash. (No pun intended.)

John McCain has been alerting people via Twitter about all of this pork in the spending bill. Speak up, people! This is your government at work.

THIS NEEDS TO STOP NOW!

Freddie Mac chief executive officer to resign

According to a press release from Freddie Mac, David Moffett, its chief executive officer, would be resigning by no later than March 13. The company expects to name an interim CEO before that time, and said the bard was working with the Federal Housing Finance Agency to name a successor.

I wonder what his package will be like. According to the article on Reuters, Freddie Mac will be submitting a request to the Treasury to draw an additional $30 billion to $35 billion under senior preferred stock purchase agreements. I guess Freddie Mac will just use part of that to pay for his severance package.

Currently, the stock is selling at 40 cents per share. The 52-week high was $34.22. I feel bad for the stockholders and all of the taxpayers who will shoulder the burden of this fiasco.

Will this nightmare ever come to an end? According to the oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffet, he said that the economy will be "in shambles" for the rest of this year. He said this in his annual letter to the shareholders in his company. Mr. Buffet is very honest and conservative in his opinions so I and a lot of other people listen to him. As I had said before, I'm not a finance expert or guru, but a lot of us saw the handwriting on the wall when things were going so great for us all. Unfortunately, we didn't heed the warnings of those who believed that the carnival ride was coming to an end. We continued to spend and finance our way through life with no cares in the world.

The ride is about to come to an abrupt end, ladies and gentlemen. As I had mentioned before, I think the economy will get worse if we do not heed the lessons of the past. Stop using credit cards and start saving. Help people in need. Bring back confidence to the economy. I believe that the next big economic bubble will be resources like water and energy. Look at those industries closely.

Pulling Out of Iraq: Difficult Position

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's plan to pull U.S. combat troops out by Aug 31, 2010 may avoid plunging Iraq back into chaos, but Washington will need to use adroit diplomacy to quell fresh conflict between rival Iraqi groups.

Although I really never supported the invasion of Iraq, I, however, do not support just pulling out for fear that we would plunge Iraq into civil war and destabilize the region. I do support a draw down of forces and then finally a complete withdrawal of forces provided that the Iraqi government and all of the factions inside of Iraq are willing to work together to begin the nation together.

The main problems I see are the various factions inside of the country, the increase of the Taliban activity in Afghanistan and Iran. It is a very delicate situation and I certainly do not envy President Obama for making a decision on this. The Iraqi government needs to step up and take control of its destiny. Unfortunately, the factions do not want to work together. Right now, for most of the factions, the United States is a common enemy for most of the factions. I honestly believe that once the United States pulls out of Iraq, the factions will begin to fight with themselves and the country will be plunged into civil war. The United States will return to Iraq to try to stabilize the country and to prevent Iran from overturning the weak government.

This is definitely a very difficult decision. I would like for our soldiers to return home, but I am also very nervous about turning over control to a weak government with warring factions and Iran just waiting to support factions that will align themselves with Iranian government and their goals.

$1.75 Trillion Dollar Debt!

As President Obama had said during his address to Congress and the American people, he would submit his budget shortly. Well, he is doing that today. President Obama is forecasting $1.75 trillion deficit in his budget proposal. The budget sets goals to overhaul the health care system and strengthen the economy. This huge budget will represent 12.5% of our gross domestic product. The largest percentage since World War II.

I'm not exactly happy with this, but I do see the reasoning behind it. Health care is driving up the cost of everything we buy. As I had mentioned earlier, it costs us about $8,000 per person per year. Heath care has been climbing steadily and there is no end to its climb.

Yesterday, I went to see my doctor to talk about my health. After the appointment, Dr. Molina had some time to talk with me about health care and share with me some of the problems he sees. For example, my health care discount program takes about four to six weeks to pay him. I think that is way too long for him to wait. He has staff, rent and equipment to pay for. Why does he have to wait for his money? He has to submit form after form after form to the insurance company in order to get paid. Sometimes, they reject the claim and he has to resubmit. Guess what? The clock starts over again. If he were to offer me a discount program, I would be more than happy to pay him directly.

I read an article a couple of weeks ago stating that more and more people are going without insurance but are able to negotiate discounts on their bills. If doctors and hospitals are willing to offer discounts to their patients, we could end up cutting out the insurance companies altogether. Or, the insurance companies would only be there when there is major health issues like open heart surgery or cancer. If I were to get discounts on my doctor's visit and prescriptions and know that an insurance company would be there to help with the major surgery bills, I would be content.

Take a look at the past. I don't recall a lot of employers offering health care to their employees. Employees were responsible for their own health care. Things worked out fine. They paid their bills to the doctors and there was no paperwork to file. Unfortunately, times have changed. We have grown dependent on health care insurance to pay for everything especially when you consider the costs of medications.

I take a couple of medications for my diabetes. Janumet is the big one for me. Even with a discount, the medication costs me about $170 a month. That's a lot of money. Most of the cost goes to three things: Development cost, Marketing and Product Liability. If I had my choice, I wouldn't take the medicine. I have talked to my doctor about generics and he wants me to stay on this one for a while. When I get my weight down, he would consider generics. Yes, my health care is back in my hands.

Health care will always be in our hands and we need to work hard by telling people to support reform and modernization of the health care system.
