California Man Sentenced to 300 Months in Prison for Production and Possession of Child Pornography

Edward Lee Sullivan, of Oakland, Calif., was sentenced today to 300 months in prison for production and possession of child pornography, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag of the Northern District of California.

Sullivan, 39, was found guilty on Feb. 25, 2011, of one count of producing and one count of possessing child pornography after a 13-day bench trial before U.S. District Court Judge D. Lowell Jensen of the Northern District of California.

Evidence presented at trial showed that during a two-week period in March 2008, Sullivan trained a 14 year-old girl to work for him as a child prostitute. During the course of those two weeks, Sullivan produced numerous photographs and videos of the minor, which documented the steps Sullivan took to prepare the girl to work as a prostitute and as an actress in pornographic movies. According to trial evidence, Sullivan filmed at least one pornographic video of the minor, which depicted Sullivan instructing the minor as she performed oral sex on him. At the time Sullivan committed these crimes, he was on parole following a 2002 state conviction for pimping and sexual conduct with a 14 year-old girl.

Sullivan also was sentenced on March 23, 2012, to lifetime supervised release following the completion of his prison term.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew S. Huang and Maureen C. Bessette of the Northern District of California and Trial Attorney Alecia Riewerts Wolak of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section. The investigation was conducted by the FBI; the Berkeley, Calif., Police Department; and the Oakland Police Department.

Santorum to Take Louisiana

With nearly a 2-1 margin over Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum will win Louisiana. 60% of the vote is in and Santorum leads Romney with nearly a majority of the vote.

Will this be another boost to the Santorum campaign and will once again have people donating to him to fill his campaign coffers? Time will tell if voters will see Santorum as a good alternative to Romney and a formidable opponent to Obama.

Do Nothing Pipeline

President Obama, while standing in front of rows and rows of pipeline, vowed that the southern leg for the Keystone XL pipeline will be built and that he will accelerate its approval.

Obama has no say in the acceleration of the pipeline. The only thing he can stop, which he has, is the building of the section of the Keystone XL which comes in from Canada to the US. International pipelines require the president's authorization. Interstate pipelines do not require his approval at all. So, the section that Obama will push through goes from Cushing, Oklahoma to Houston, Texas with nothing to pump through it. We will have a pipeline that will have nothing running through it.

Obama has stopped that part of the pipeline and will not approval. In a recent Gallup poll, 57% of Americans approve of the Keystone XL pipeline. 44% of Democrats approve of the pipeline.

With gas prices jumping 30 cents in one month and ten states already seeing $4 per gallon at the pump, the president's re-election hopes are dwindling with each penny increase in fuel. Fuel is not the only thing on the raise. Food prices are climbing as well.

US Gas Prices Went Up 6% in February

Gas prices continue their upward climb. Some analysts believe that they will climb even higher. High gas prices, according to the government, contributed to a 0.4% overall increase in consumer prices in February.

Rising gas prices combined with a poor economic recovery may point to a double-dip recession and cause unemployment to increase. Should this occur, President Obama may have more issues than he can deal with during the presidential election.

Obamacare Costs Almost Doubles!

Yesterday, the Congressional Budget Office released a new report that showed a new projection for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) (aka Obamacare). Instead of the program costing $900 billion over 10 years, it will now cost the American taxpayers $1.76 TRILLION.

In order to get this bill through Congress, Democrats used many accounting tricks to ram this bill through including the most egregious which delayed full implementation of the law until 2014. This trick was used to get around the standard ten-year budget window used by the CBO. This accounting "sleight of hand" made the program cheaper and met Obama's pledge to keep costs around "$900 billion over 10 years".

In the CBO's own report, it states the following.

Those amounts do not encompass all of the budgetary impacts of the ACA because that legislation has many other provisions, including some that will cause significant reductions in Medicare spending and others that will generate added tax revenues, relative to what would have occurred under prior law.

The cost of this program could continue to rise or Congress could act to make "significant reductions in Medicare spending" to fund Obamacare.

On September 9, 2009, President Obama said this to the Joint Session of Congress and the American people.

Now, add it all up, and the plan I'm proposing will cost around $900 billion over 10 years -- less than we have spent on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and less than the tax cuts for the wealthiest few Americans that Congress passed at the beginning of the previous administration. (Applause.) Now, most of these costs will be paid for with money already being spent -- but spent badly -- in the existing health care system. The plan will not add to our deficit. The middle class will realize greater security, not higher taxes. And if we are able to slow the growth of health care costs by just one-tenth of 1 percent each year -- one-tenth of 1 percent -- it will actually reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over the long term.

Nancy Pelosi was absolutely correct. We had to pass it to see what was in it. As we continue to watch as Obamacare continues its implementation, we will soon find out that the cost will far outweigh any benefit and that other programs like Medicare will suffer for it.

Who's Out of Touch with Average Middle-Class Americans?

Last night, Vice President Joe Biden attended a $10,000 per couple fundraiser at the home of Senator John Kerry in Georgetown. As the 87 wealthy Democrats dined on grass-fed NY strip steaks and white truffle mashed potatos, they listened to Biden go on and on about how the Republicans are so out of touch with the average middle-class American.

“These guys don’t have a sense of the average folks out there,” Biden said, “They don’t know what it means to be middle class.”

Who's out of touch, Joe?

Doomsday Scenario for Banks

The Federal Reserve released its version of financial Armageddon today. In its doomsday scenario for the nation's 19 largest banks, it assumes 13 percent unemployment, a 50-percent drop in the stock market and a 21-percent decline in housing prices.

The results of this financial failure scenario will be released on Thursday at 4:30 PM ET. Although the Federal Reserve conducts these tests every year, this is the first time since 2009 that the results will be made public.

The stress tests are designed to make sure that banks are able to handle a financial meltdown by having enough cash and cash-like securities to withstand the crisis.

President Lobbying Against Keystone XL Pipeline Jobs

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement on the Senate floor Thursday regarding efforts by the President to lobby Democrat Senators against Senator Hoeven's amendment on the Keystone XL Pipeline:

“Last night the two parties reached agreement on amendments to the Highway Bill. I’m happy to report that there are a number of strong job creating measures in the mix. One that stands out is Senator Hoeven’s amendment on the Keystone XL Pipeline.

“Most Americans strongly support building this pipeline and the jobs that would come with it. And it’s incomprehensible to me that the President of the United States is lobbying against it.

“There’s a report this morning that President Obama is personally making phone calls to Democrat Senators he thinks might vote for this amendment. He’s asking them not to. And, frankly, it’s hard to even comprehend how out of touch he is on this issue.

“I mean, think about it: at a moment when millions are out of work, gas prices are skyrocketing and the Middle East is in turmoil, we’ve got a president who’s up making phone calls trying to block a pipeline here at home. It’s unbelievable.

“What we’re seeing in Congress this week is a study in contrasts.

“On the one hand you’ve got a Republican-controlled House that’s about to pass a bipartisan jobs bill that would help entrepreneurs and innovators by getting Washington out of the way. And today we’ve got a Democratic-controlled Senate trying to line up votes against amendments that would create jobs—and a President lobbying against the biggest one.

“We’ve got an opportunity to work together to create jobs. We can do that with these amendments. And we can do that by taking up the bipartisan jobs bill the House will pass later today.

“Let me just say a word about that. The bipartisan jobs bill the House will pass later today is supported by the President. It is ready to go, and I hope that once it gets over to the Senate we'll simply take it up and pass it.

“It's an example of a measure that is supported by Republicans and Democrats and the President that we believe will clear the House with a very large majority. I think the sooner we pass that here in the Senate and send it down to the President for signature, the better.

“With that, Mr. President, I yield the floor.”

Judicial Watch Sues U.S. Air Force for Records Detailing Costs of Michelle Obama’s August 2010 ‘Whirlwind’ Vacation to Spain

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it filed a lawsuit on March 5, 2012, in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia against the United States Air Force to obtain records detailing Michelle Obama’s controversial August 2010 vacation to Spain. Overall, Judicial Watch is seeking information pertaining to the costs to taxpayers for this vacation as well as any indication of official business conducted by Mrs. Obama while she was in the country.

“That this lavish trip may be a source of embarrassment for the Obamas is not a sufficient reason to stonewall the release of records. Evidently, American taxpayers were stuck with a sizable bill so Mrs. Obama could tour around Spain with her family and friends. This administration, as a supposed steward of taxpayer dollars, has an obligation to disclose the full costs of the Obama family’s luxury trip,” stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

Oil Reaches $110 a Barrel

With a disputed report of a possible pipeline blast in Saudi Arabia and India's refusal to cut oil imports from Iran as part of the sanction against them regarding the Iranian nuclear policy, oil prices soared higher today to $110 per barrel. The price of oil has leaped to its highest since its peak in mid-2008.

With no relief in sight, gas prices will continue its upward climb. In cities in California and New York, gas prices have already reached $5 a gallon.

The president, in a definite political ploy to curry favor with voters, is going to release oil from the strategic reserve during the summer. In a speech in Florida, the president made it clear that it is not amount of oil on the market that is driving gas prices up. According Obama, there are many factors including India's and China's demand for gasoline that is driving the price up.
