US "Misery Index" Highest Since 1983

Although it is the unofficial gauge of human misery in the US, the "misery index" has reached a 28-year high.

The index is calculated by using the rate of inflation and unemployment. The index is now resting at 13.0. This information underscores the continuing problems in the economy with high unemployment and increasing inflation.

Consumer prices rose 3.9% in the year ending in September. In this year alone, the index has risen by more than 2 points.
